Spring is slowly but steadily kicking into gear out on the Hauraki. It is still a bit feast or famine – if you can find the gannets diving you’re in for some hot fishing but if not the snapper bite has been tricky. The best bird action has been north Waiheke, Firth of Thames, and off the East Coast Bays.
Schools of snapper are also holding out wider NW of Channel Island and around the middle ground. There are a few dolphins and Bryde’s whales working out here so keep your eyes peeled as they’re a good sign of where the fish will be.
There has been some nice softbaiting action in the south Kawau area. This region should start firing soon when the pilchards schools move in and the snaps feed up hard before breeding.
Kingfish have been around but not in great numbers yet. Expect these brutes to also follow the bait in very soon and it will be all on!
Until next time
