Hauraki Express Fishing Report 17th October

Stuart

The fishing has really kicked up a couple of gears over the past couple of weeks with consistent work-up action around the Gulf. The hotspots have been the Firth of Thames, the Happy Jacks, between Tiritiri and Kawau, and out from Takatu Point. If you hit the bite time and the birds are raining in success is guaranteed – the big snapper are moving in getting ready to spawn and kingfish are lurking around in greater numbers. If you find the birds lazily sitting on the water then it’s likely the fishing will be slow and you’ll need to wait for the bite to start again. The last two hours of the tide has generally been when the action is best.

Reports are that huge pilchard schools are heading down towards the Jellicoe Channel between Little Barrier and the mainland so hopefully most evade the gauntlet of commercial netters and lead to insane November and December fishing like last year. Remember that this is where the pillies many buy for bait come from – another reason we love using lures. They catch the bigger fish anyway!

Thursdays, Fridays and weekends are almost booked out for both our boats before Christmas so if you want to have an amazing work-do get in touch soon.

Cheers
