It’s firing out there with workups galore and closer to home than normal. The only issue is the humming prevailing SW wind which makes things a little harder – although the fish don’t mind.
Over the last week or so workups have been thumping between Rakino and Tiritiri, in the Tiri Channel, Whangapaoroa Bay, south of Kawau, and also throughout the Firth of Thames. The big snapper have certainly moved into these areas – gorging on pilchards as they prepare for their annual fornicating.
Packs of marauding kingfish have been intercepting the bigger bait schools in these same areas so don’t be surprised if you hook a steamtrain on the slow-jigging gear.
Generally this spring action only intensifies over the next month, so we could be in for some mind-blowing workup scenes.
Stay tuned
