The New Year has rolled around and we’ve been getting back into the swing of things. After a bout of strong and pesky wind from the SW quarter, the weather has come right and it’s starting to feel like summer out on the Gulf.
The bulk of our efforts have been directed at kingfish, and we’ve been finding good numbers holding on many of the local reefs. The bite times have been a bit niggly however, so don’t write off a spot until you’ve tried both tide phases. Closer to Auckland the incoming tide has been more fruitful than the outgoing over the past week. We’ve been finding our livebait between Rakino and Tiri in around 25m of water.
The workups are still happening – there was a monster one last week in Administration Bay, and sporadic gannet action has been found around the 30m mark. The snapper haven’t been on the chew very hard in these areas, but out wider there has been some amazing snapper fishing. Before a water taxi pickup at Whangaparapara, Great Barrier last week we found a massive patch of fish and they were ravenous – even monstering a 300g kingi jig dropped down for a laugh.
Cheers
