Well folks, what a golden period of weather and fishing we’ve been enjoying over the past few weeks.
The kingfish are literally everywhere at the moment – be it the inner reefs, outer pins, or busting up the anchovy schools close to Rangitoto, Rakino, or Waiheke. A sure sign of anchovies are terns working, and on these still mornings you can often see the kingfish smashing baitfish on the surface once they’ve rounded up a school – exciting stuff!
Workups are picking up too and there’s some decent snapper fishing to be had. We’ve found some nice action East of Kawau towards the middle of the Gulf recently.
The only blight on the scene are the packs of bronze whaler sharks chowing down on kingfish once hooked up. If you are left with a mangled and bloodied kingi head, please move spots rather than continue fishing. It’s pretty near impossible to drag a king away from the sharks once they’re on the scene.
Cheers
