Well folks we’re finally back in action on the Hauraki. There was some apprehension heading out on our first charter back because it had been a long time between drinks – however we found plenty of hard-fighting kingfish after trying a few blank spots! It seems the kings have definitely moved out wider in the Gulf as the water temp has dropped noticeably since the lockdown began.
We saw a few workups on the way out to the kingi reefs and no doubt the snapper are hard on the chew. Normally late autumn is a prime time to nab big snapper as they feed up hard before winter.
The anchovy schools are still hanging around the inner Gulf so there will be kings stalking them around the closer reefs where the bait remains. Find the terns working the shallows in areas such as Kawau, Tiritiri and the Noises and slow troll a couple of live mackerel and you should do well for the next month or so.
Looks like we’re in for a sustained week of easterlies which provides calm water and decent opportunities around the Gulf. Follow your nose or even easier book a trip with us and fill the bin with snapper and kingies!
To celebrate the great work you guys did staying off the water over lockdown the legends from Daiwa New Zealand have given us a Saltist SJ 200H & TD Black Kohga 66HB – RRP $699.99 to give away. All you have to do is book a charter before 29th May and you’ll go into the draw! Head to www.haurakiexpress.co.nz or call 0211966617 to book now
