We’ve been out over the last few days and holy mackerel the fishing has been sensational!
There’s a big area of dolphins and gannets working between Takatu Point and Little Barrier Island. Underneath this action the snapper are congregating, and aren’t shy inhaling the Daiwa Kohga lures. The average size of fish has been solid, and it will only get better as the water warms up and the snapper and kingfish head in closer to Auckland. There hasn’t been a distinct bite time here – just steady action throughout the incoming, outgoing, and even slack tides.
Yesterday the wind was up so we opted to head east from the city and check out the more sheltered Firth of Thames. This option payed off handsomely as we came across big thumping workups not far from the bottom end of Waiheke. Underneath the line-tangling kahawai were hordes of willing snapper.
Whilst there hasn’t been much action around Tiritiri and north of Waiheke the bait schools are amassing and workups here won’t be many weeks away for you city slicker weekend warriors.
With steady westerlies forecast for the week ahead it will be a bit lumpy out there but well worth a crack! Bring on the spring workup season.
Cheers
Nick & George
