Ahoy folks,
Kingfish are the name of the game at the moment. Most inner and outer Hauraki Gulf reefs are holding decent numbers. Unfortunately, bronze whaler sharks are still a regular nuisance, especially at the popular spots like Flat, Shearer and Anchorite Rocks. Topwater and jigging will work, but livebaits seem to be attracting bigger fish on a more consistent basis.
We’ve been grabbing mackerel for livies around the anchovy schools in areas like Rangitoto Channel, Motutapu, Rakino, and Motuihe Channel. If the birds are working the anchovy schools hard keep your eyes peeled for larger boils – often the kings will be present and slow-trolling livies or throwing stickbaits around will yield a nice fish or three.
The snapper fishing out wide is still slow, but there is some nice fishing to be had flicking soft-baits around the shallows inshore. Right now is the best time to catch decent snapper right up into Auckland’s harbours and estuaries – you might be surprised how close to home these fish are.
We expect the kingie fishing to keep going great guns for the next few months, and spots such as Little Barrier, Horn Rock and Channel Island will be holding some big dogs.
