Ahoy folks,
It’s been an exciting few weeks on the briney for the Hauraki Express crew – with the Auld Mug safely locked away, kingis still lurking around the Gulf’s reefs, and snapper coming back on the bite!
The kingies have been chewing livebaits at most of the local reefs, but have been a bit finicky if you get the wrong tide. The outgoing tide seems to be producing better than the incoming at most spots, and live mackerel as always have been getting the quality fish. There’s been some outstanding fishing out on the reefs by Little Barrier, but the persistent winds from the southeast have made reaching them tough work. Luckily, it looks like the weather is improving for this upcoming week.
Snapper are getting hungrier – typical for this time of year as the water slowly cools. You don’t have to go far either – flick a few softbaits around the anchovy schools in the harbour and inshore areas like northern Rangitoto and you should be away laughing. There’s also been some increasing gannet activity north of gannet rock, up towards the top of Coromandel, and in the middle of the Gulf. Daiwa Kohga lures have been working well under this activity, particularly orange ones.
Enjoy
